In a photo captured by the Fars News Agency, a solemn crowd of mourners can be seen gathered around a truck transporting the coffins carrying the remains of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.

Iran grieves their late leader Ebrahim Raisi. News of Raisi’s death in a tragic helicopter crash spread quickly throughout the country as people took to the streets waving flags and portraits to mourn. Raisi held conservative views and his sudden loss leaves uncertainty around succession within the hardline faction.

The Solemn Journey

On Tuesday, the slow procession commenced near the crash site in Tabriz. A truck carried Raisi’s casket and others through narrow alleys as mourners followed in black, tossing flowers out of respect. An emcee lamented the “martyrs” over loudspeakers while people mourned. The procession continues through holy Qom and later reaches Tehran on Wednesday to honor Raisi.

A Potential Supreme Leader

At only 63, Raisi was seen as a potential successor to Supreme Leader Khamenei, making his death a major blow to conservative plans. To honor Raisi’s status, his body will be taken to the famed Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad where Khamenei himself will lead prayers, a rare honor in Shiite tradition. The shrine, visited by millions yearly, houses Persian heroes.

Raisi’s rule left Iran’s youth disillusioned with conservative control as he suppressed uprisings against repressive laws and continued quelling dissent, heavily backed by hardliners.
